'ROLAKE MI OWON' A Yoruba phrase which literally carries same meaning and affection as a letter to a lover named 'Rolake' addressed in English 'MY DEAR ROLAKE'. This tunic also a piece from A HAPPI PLACE 2023 style story, is borne out of inspiration from the emotions and hope that run strongly between lovers separated by war, when the man is drafted into the army to fight a cause he had no say on , while his lover, wife and mother of his kids 'Rolake' is left with almost certain hopelessness and hurt on not knowing if the last time she laid eyes on her man and father to her kids will be the last time.
The series of letter exchanges between lovers in the days of the Nigerian Civil War in '67 and the World war before then, starting with this affectionate phrase in whatever language, somewhat reignites a dying hope to all Rolakes silently praying at home for the safe return of their lovers and husbands.
This design is an Ode and also a SANKOFA admonishment 'Look at the past to inform the future' , there's no beauty or gain from conflicts, no war fought restores more than was lost.
