The name Toucoulor is inspired by the name of the plural Toucoulour people in Mali and West Africa, for their ethnic diversity and openness. It symbolizes Africa and its interbreeding, but also the values of transmission, solidarity, authenticity and inclusion that we wish to embody. The brand is a poignant tribute to the origins of our creator, to her Fulani grandmother whom she did not know, but whose stories her father told her on her hospital bed during these long afternoons of confidences that 'they shared him and her, before his death. The image of this grandmother transmitted by the words of a father, at a key moment, is a revelation. Her strength, her unconditional love, her independence, her resilience, break for the first time all the clichés that the young stylist had about her own culture and about the women in her family. She must experience this return to basics. Amputated by her father, she leaves to visit Africa, the land of her family that she finally knew little about, raised on the benches of the French Republic. This initiatory trip to Mali and Senegal is like a second birth, and from there the Toucoulor brand was born in 2019. An ethical and committed fashion brand, Toucoulor pays tribute to Africa, while expressing its love for Paris, with a in an uninhibited manner, by taking on the different facets of plural identities, beyond ethnic clichés. Toucoulor pieces are the clever mix of Parisian and city life sprinkled with subtle African touches. At Toucoulor, we are committed to ethical and responsible fashion, by choosing our materials with care, especially in Africa where the team works on the preservation of ancestral know-how, and revalorizes traditional fabrics, in particular dyed fabric. indigo which we have made our trademark. Our collections are made in France, some pieces handcrafted in Africa, and we are committed to quality in every detail, because all productions are supervised and on a human scale. The Toucoulor collections are produced in limited editions to guarantee exclusivity, but also to avoid mass production. Toucoulor promotes zero waste by using designer scraps for many of his pieces. Finally, we are committed to promoting a brand that is inclusive and represents minorities, in particular black women who are still under-represented in fashion, and in the media and artistic space in general.
