Our story:
In the 1960s, the city of Douala in Cameroon produced and exported 6 000 000 pairs of shoes per year. “Pas un pas sans ma Bata” people used to say. Then many things went wrong. Deregulation of the import of second-hand clothing in the 1980s, devaluation of the currency in the 1990s, free Chinese import in the 2000s, free shoes distributed by European and American NGOs in 2010s... The Cameroonian footwear industry died a slow death.
In 2014 in visit there we saw and asked: “why do you import shoes when with your wood you can manufacture shoes that are100% natural, healthy and eco-friendly?”
We partnered with the last local shoemakers and started hiring and training a new generation.
In 2017 we opened the first fair trade clog factory in Africa. OMES was born.
The long tradition of Douala shoemaking continues.
